چکیده

AbstructWe model tissue as a collection of point scatterers embedded in a uniform media, and show that the higher-order statistics (HOS) of the scatterer spacing distribution can be estimated from digitized radio frequency (RF) scan line segments and be used in obtaining tissue signatures. We assume that RF echoes are non-Gaussian, on the grounds of empiricaVtheoretical justifications presented in the literature. Based on our model for tissue microstructure, we develop schemes for the estimation of resolvable periodicity as well as correlations among nonperiodic scatterers. Using HOS of the scattered signal, we define as tissue “color” a quantity that describes the scatterer spatial correlations, show how to evaluate it from the higher-order correlations of the digitized RF scan line segments, and investigate its potential as a tissue signature. The tools employed, i.e., HOS, were chosen as the most appropriate ones because they suppress Gaussian processes, such as the one arising from the diffused scatterers. HOS, unlike second-order statistics, also preserve the Fourierphase of the signature, the color of the tissue response. Working on simulated and clinical data, we show that the proposed periodicity estimation technique is superior lo the widely used power spectrum and cepstrum techniques in tlerms of the accuracy of estimations. We also show that even when there is no significant periodicity in data, we are still able to characterize tissues using signatures based on the higher-order comulant structure of the scatterer spacing distribution.

An adaptive speckle suppression filter for medical ultrasonic imaging

An adaptive smoothing technique for speckle suppression in medical B-scan ultrasonic imaging is presented. The technique is based on filtering with appropriately shaped and sized local kernels. For each image pixel, a filtering kernel, which fits to the local homogeneous region containing the processed pixel, is obtained through a local statistics based region growing technique. The performance...

طراحی و ساخت روبشگر فراصوتی جهت تهیه تصاویر روبش B (B-Scan) از قطعات صنعتی

The results of ultrasonic tests are usually displayed as A-scan signals. In an A-scan signal, reflections of ultrasonic wave form different reflectors are shown as sharp echoes on a time by amplitude display. Interpretation of these echoes can sometimes be quite difficult and usually requires knowledgeable and experienced specialists. There exist other methods of displaying the ultrasonic test...

Estimation of pulses in ultrasound B-scan images.

It is shown, based on an expression for the received pressure field in pulsed medical ultrasound systems, that a common one-dimensional pulse can be estimated from individual A-lines. An autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model is suggested for the pulse, and an estimator based on the prediction error method is derived. The estimator is used on a segment of an A-line, assuming that the pulse ...

Ultrasonic texture motion analysis: theory and simulation

A theoretical model was previously developed to evaluate the relationship between the dynamics of ultrasonic speckle and its underlying tissue. The model is divided into an instrumental part represented by the point spread function (in the far field) of the ultrasonic apparatus and a moving tissue component described by a collection of scatterers. By computing the convolution of these terms and...
